Can you tell us about your journey as an artist?
I started singing at age 3 in a gospel church, which ignited my love for music and taught me the foundations of the Soul. Poetry also became a strong tool for me, and over time, my poetry transformed into songs with powerful melodies. I began making music seriously in 2016 when I recorded my first track called “Lost.” After moving to Vancouver in 2019, I took my music career more seriously, releasing “Dedicated” in 2021 and “Hate 2 Love” in 2023. Recently, I released a song called “Tell Me Why,” and I have another track, “Manifest,” coming out on June 4th. I’m working on more singles and possibly an EP by the end of the year.
Who or what has influenced your artistry the most?
Gospel was the beginning for me, with influences from Mahalia Jackson, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams, and others. As I got older, I fell in love with artists like Ms. Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Aaliyah, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu. My musical research led me to discover legends like Roberta Flack, Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Etta James, Muddy Waters, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, and Lionel Richie. These artists deeply influenced my love for RnB.
How would you describe the unique style and themes in your art?
My uniqueness lies in arranging and writing my songs, aiming to bring back the classic structure of RnB and soul while modernizing it by keeping it short and sweet. In Vancouver, I haven’t heard many artists with a Caribbean flair, and I believe I’ll be the one to bring that to the scene.
Can you share your most cherished project or piece and what makes it unique?
My most recent release, “Manifest,” is my most cherished project. This song fully embraces my future by truly manifesting it. It’s also my first-ever music video release, set to debut on June 4th, 2024.
Reflecting on your journey, what obstacles have you encountered, and how did you overcome them?
Moving from Toronto to Vancouver with just a suitcase was my biggest obstacle. I knew no one and had to find a studio and a producer I could mesh with, which was challenging. However, I adapted, found a stable job, got an apartment, and now I’m part of a great team at BestSoul Records.
How do you approach continuous growth and evolution in your artistic endeavours?
Trying new things helps me grow as an artist. Meeting new people, learning new styles, and collaborating on features strengthen me as an artist.
Walk us through your typical creative process.
I don’t have a specific routine. Sometimes, I’m just chilling, and a melody comes to mind. I record it, put words to it, and then drop it on any beat. Other times, I hear a beat and start writing, and the melody comes afterward.
Have you had the opportunity to collaborate with fellow local artists or organizations? If yes, could you share some highlights?
Yes, I’ve collaborated with a few artists. It’s pretty easy if you can find people with similar interests in music and mesh well.
In your opinion, how crucial is collaboration within the local artistic community?
Collaboration within the local artistic community is vital. It fosters creativity, builds connections, and strengthens the community as a whole.
How do you connect with the local community through your arts?
I connect with the local community primarily through social media.
What are your short-term and long-term aspirations as an artist?
In the short term, I aim to quit my job and do music full-time. I plan to have an album out by the end of next year. Currently, I’m working on some singles.
Are there dream projects or collaborations you want to pursue in the future?
Yes, I have dream projects and collaborations I want to pursue, but for now, I’m focusing on my upcoming singles and album.
What valuable advice would you give to aspiring artists in your community?
Life is hard, but giving up on your dreams makes it harder. Push through it! You can do this. I came to Toronto with nothing and nobody, and now I’m a fiancé, and my music is being heard and loved. Don’t let obstacles stop you; they’re just there to test you. It’s your life! Take control of it.
How do you manage the delicate balance between pursuing your passion and meeting practical needs in your artistic journey?
I adapt well to every situation and don’t find it difficult. I write things down in list form and get everything done by prioritizing.
