Voters in North Vancouver-Capilano head to the polls Monday for a federal byelection, and if the campaign coverage is any indication, one issue is drowning out everything else: affordability.

Housing costs and traffic have emerged as the biggest concerns facing the riding heading into the vote — not exactly a surprise for anyone living on the North Shore, where the combination of limited housing supply, bridge and highway bottlenecks, and rising costs has been building pressure for years.

Why a Byelection Matters

Byelections don’t usually get the same attention as general elections, but they carry outsized weight precisely because turnout tends to be lower — a smaller, more motivated slice of the electorate ends up deciding the outcome. That makes byelections a genuinely useful read on which issues are actually driving people to show up, rather than just polling well in the abstract.

North Vancouver-Capilano is one of three ridings holding byelections this round, alongside seats in Toronto and Chicoutimi, but the local story here is distinctly North Shore: a riding that’s felt the affordability squeeze as acutely as almost anywhere in Metro Vancouver, now getting a direct say in who represents it.

What to Watch

Whatever your politics, a byelection decided largely on affordability and traffic is worth paying attention to as a signal — these are the exact issues shaping how liveable Metro Vancouver feels day to day, well beyond this one riding’s boundaries.

Are you in the riding? What’s driving your vote this time? 👀
