September in B.C. means one thing beyond back-to-school energy: Culture Days is back, and it’s turning 17.
For almost two decades, Culture Days has existed for one reason — to get people trying arts and culture activities they’d normally talk themselves out of. No membership, no expertise required, no pressure to be “the art person” in your friend group.
Just low-barrier, often free, ways to actually participate instead of scrolling past a poster for it.
Why It’s Worth Paying Attention To
Vancouver has no shortage of arts and culture happening year-round — the friction is usually cost, or just not knowing where to start. That’s the entire premise Culture Days is built to remove.
It’s the kind of initiative that quietly does a lot for accessibility: workshops, open studios, performances, and hands-on sessions that would otherwise sit behind a ticket price or an intimidating first step.
It also tends to spotlight the smaller, independent side of the city’s creative community — the studios and collectives that don’t have a marketing budget to compete with the big venues, but absolutely have something worth showing up for.
How to Get Involved
Programming and participating locations shift year to year and typically get added closer to the date, so the best move is to check Culture Days’ official listings as September rolls in, rather than relying on last year’s lineup.
Whatever ends up on the list, the format stays the same: show up, try the thing, no experience necessary.
