Good things apparently take a while: Burnaby’s long-awaited mountain bike park is finally about to open, more than two years after it was first announced.
A Long Time Coming
Anyone who’s followed Metro Vancouver infrastructure projects knows “two years since it was announced” is basically warp speed by local standards. Whatever the delays were, riders in Burnaby and across the region are finally getting a dedicated space built specifically for mountain biking — not a repurposed trail, not a workaround, an actual purpose-built park.
Why It Matters for the Region
Metro Vancouver already has a reputation as one of North America’s better regions for mountain biking, largely thanks to the North Shore’s legendary (and famously technical) trail network. A dedicated park in Burnaby adds something the North Shore doesn’t really offer: an accessible, closer-to-transit option for riders who don’t want to trek out to Mount Seymour or Fromme every time they want to ride.
That accessibility matters more than it sounds. A lot of the region’s best riding has historically required a car, a truck rack, and a fair bit of driving — a purpose-built park closer to the city core lowers the barrier to entry for people just getting into the sport, not just the riders who’ve already invested in a full setup.
Exact opening date and trail details weren’t confirmed at post time, so keep an eye on the City of Burnaby’s official channels for the ribbon-cutting. But after a two-year wait, this one’s worth the follow.
