One cabinet seat is getting extra attention in B.C. right now: the minister responsible for Indigenous relations.
With Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson set to form government, The Tyee reports the pick is one of his first big decisions, and that the choices range from a staunch critic of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) to a moderate critic to someone who favours a respectful new legal framework.
The context
DRIPA, passed in 2019, commits the province to aligning its laws with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Doerkson has reaffirmed that repealing it is a top priority for his party, according to CityNews Vancouver.
That makes the person at the table with First Nations especially important. The minister becomes the day-to-day face of the province to Indigenous governments, and the tone they set can shape negotiations on land, resources and services.
What to watch
- Who gets the portfolio, and what experience they bring.
- Whether the government proposes a replacement framework alongside any repeal.
- How First Nations leaders respond once the cabinet is named.
We haven’t seen the cabinet announced, so none of this is settled. We’ll leave the predictions to the pundits and focus on what’s confirmed: the decision is coming, and Indigenous communities across Vancouver and B.C. will be watching closely.
