In the lively cityscape of Vancouver, Canada, I’m on a journey as an artist. I was born in London, England, to Jamaican parents, and my surroundings there, filled with diverse cultures, have always influenced me deeply. Now, as a visual artist, I try to capture the richness of this cultural mosaic, celebrating the people and the communities that make our world so vibrant.

Finding Inspiration in Diversity

My art draws heavily from the various friend groups I’ve been a part of throughout my life. London’s cultural mix left a lasting impression on me, and even though Vancouver is different in how its communities interact, I find ways to reconnect with that part of my upbringing. I’m particularly drawn to traditional patterns and the range of skin tones, which often find their way into my work.

The Artistic Process Unveiled

My creative process varies from piece to piece. Sometimes, ideas come to me out of nowhere, while other times, I deliberately choose a subject to explore. I always start by researching the culture or community I want to represent and sketch a rough layout before diving into the final piece.

Cherished Creations: “Szee-won”

One of my favourite pieces is a portrait I did of a close friend named “Szee-won.” She’s not just a friend but someone who’s always been there for me through thick and thin. Plus, she’s part Filipino, a community I’ve always felt connected to, so creating this piece was special to me.

Navigating Obstacles and Cultivating Growth

My biggest challenge as an artist is often my self-doubt. It’s a constant battle to remind myself that I have what it takes to achieve my goals. To keep growing, I’m always exploring new techniques and learning from other artists.

Balancing Complexity with Simplicity

In my artistic style, I aim for a blend of simplicity and detail. I keep the main focus of my pieces simple while incorporating intricate patterns and details, highlighting the interconnectedness of people and cultures. Each piece is a nod to the individuals who have shaped these cultural landscapes.

Dreams on the Horizon

In the short term, I hope to make art my full-time gig. In the long term, I dream of collaborating on significant events like the FIFA World Cup or the Olympics. And who knows? Maybe one day, my art will be on the tail of an airplane!

Collaboration and Community Engagement

While I haven’t had many formal collaborations yet, I’ve received much support from friends and the local community. Their input and encouragement have been invaluable to me. I also try to connect with the community by showcasing my work at events around the city.

Guiding Lights for Aspiring Artists

My advice to aspiring artists is simple: Just start. You don’t have to be amazing right away. It’s all about taking that first step. And when it comes to balancing passion with practicality, good time management is key.

In my art, I strive to capture the essence of diversity and resilience. It’s a journey filled with ups and downs, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. So, come along with me as I continue to explore the beauty of cultural landscape, one brushstroke at a time.
