The results are in: Liberal Braeden Caley has won the federal byelection in North Vancouver-Capilano, the riding we’ve been following since affordability and traffic emerged as the top issues on voters’ minds heading into Monday’s vote.
Caley, a longtime Liberal political staffer, picks up a seat that’s been considered safely Liberal for a while now — former cabinet minister Jonathan Wilkinson won it for a fourth term last year with almost 60 percent of the vote. His win was also one of three Liberal victories across the country’s byelections held the same night.
What This Confirms, and What It Doesn’t
A safe seat staying safe isn’t a dramatic result on its own, but it’s still a useful data point: it suggests the affordability and traffic frustrations driving the campaign conversation didn’t translate into enough of a protest vote to flip a historically strong Liberal riding. Whether that holds for a full general election, with different turnout dynamics and a longer campaign, is a separate question entirely.
What it does confirm is that the issues themselves haven’t gone anywhere. Caley now inherits a riding where housing costs and North Shore traffic remain the dominant concerns, whether or not they moved the needle on election night.

The real test for any new MP in a riding like this isn’t the byelection win — it’s whether the affordability concerns that defined the campaign actually show up as priorities once they’re in office. North Vancouver-Capilano residents now have a direct line to hold that promise to account.
