Chef Reuben Major isn’t chasing a flashier postal code. His newest project, Violeté, is landing right on Commercial Drive — a bistro he’s describing as close to home, in every sense.
That choice says something. Commercial Drive has spent decades building a reputation as one of Vancouver’s most fiercely independent food strips — shaped by waves of Italian, Latin American, and other immigrant communities who turned it into a neighbourhood where small, personal restaurants have always mattered more than big-name openings. A chef choosing to root a new bistro there, rather than downtown or in a flashier retail district, is choosing to be a neighbourhood spot first.
For a strip that’s seen its share of turnover in recent years, a chef deliberately doubling down rather than testing a trendier location is a vote of confidence in the Drive’s staying power — and in the idea that a restaurant’s job is to serve the people who actually live around it.
Exact opening dates, menu details, and hours weren’t confirmed at post time — keep an eye on Violeté’s own channels as the opening gets closer.
