Vancouver Airbnb Hosts Pocketed $4,500 on Average During the FIFA World Cup

New data shows the typical Vancouver Airbnb host earned $4,500 during the FIFA World Cup — a window into how the tournament reshaped the city.

Turns out hosting a slice of the FIFA World Cup came with a real payday for a lot of Vancouver Airbnb hosts.

New data from Airbnb itself puts the typical Vancouver host’s earnings at $4,500 over the World Cup period — as fans from across the world poured into the city for matches at BC Place, one of the tournament’s Canadian host venues.

That kind of number is a pretty direct snapshot of what a global mega-event does to short-term demand in a city: hotel rooms fill up fast and get expensive, and travellers start looking at whatever’s left on the short-term rental market instead. For hosts who had a spare room, a basement suite, or a whole unit to list, the World Cup window was clearly worth clearing the calendar for.

What This Means for the Housing Conversation

Vancouver’s relationship with short-term rentals has been a live wire for years now, with the city and province both tightening rules in the name of protecting long-term rental supply in an already brutal housing market. A number like $4,500 per host is a nice windfall for the people who earned it — but it’s also exactly the kind of figure that fuels the other side of that debate: every unit generating short-term-rental income during a high-demand window is a unit that wasn’t available to a renter looking for a place to actually live.

Both realities are part of the same story. The World Cup was a genuine economic moment for hosts across the city, and it landed in the middle of an affordability crisis that hasn’t eased up.

Did you rent out a room during the World Cup, or were you the one struggling to find a place to stay — or live — while it was in town? Tell us how it played out for you.
