Why You’ll See B.C. Landmarks Lit Up Blue All Through September

B.C. landmarks are lighting up blue this September for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month’s Light Up in Blue campaign.

If you spot a familiar Vancouver-area landmark bathed in blue light this month, it’s not a branding stunt — it’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and the Canadian Prostate Cancer Foundation’s Light Up in Blue campaign is lighting up iconic sites across the province all September long.

Some landmarks will glow blue for just a single night, others for a longer stretch through the month — a simple, visible way to keep a serious health issue in public view without requiring anyone to attend an event or donate on the spot.

Why the Visibility Matters

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, and early detection through regular screening remains one of the most effective tools against it — but screening only happens when people are actually thinking about it. A lit-up landmark isn’t a substitute for a doctor’s appointment, but it’s a low-cost, city-wide reminder that might nudge someone to finally book one.

Campaigns like this also tend to open the door to conversations that otherwise don’t happen easily — men’s health, and prostate cancer specifically, still carries a stigma that keeps a lot of people from talking about symptoms or family history until it’s urgent.

What You Can Do

Beyond appreciating the blue lights, September is a good nudge to check in on the men in your life — a father, a partner, a friend — about whether they’re due for a screening conversation with their doctor. Small prompts like this campaign exist because they actually work.
