Remember that World Cup fan-zone energy that took over Granville Street? It’s making a comeback — the Granville Pedestrian Zone is turning into an open-air disco before summer officially wraps.
Downtown’s entertainment strip has had a complicated few years. For a long time it was mostly known as the place you ended up after 11 p.m., not somewhere you’d actually choose to hang out during the day. The city’s push to pedestrianize sections of Granville has been a slow experiment in turning that reputation around — closing it off to cars, adding patio space, and leaning into it as an actual public gathering spot instead of just a strip of bars and nightclubs.
Turning that same stretch into a dance floor is a pretty logical next move, and it tracks with a bigger pattern in how cities have been trying to activate downtown cores post-pandemic: street closures aren’t just about traffic anymore, they’re about giving people a reason to actually linger. Expect street-party energy, but with a soundtrack built for dancing instead of just walking through on your way somewhere else.
We’re still waiting on a confirmed date and DJ lineup, so this one’s more “mark it as a maybe” than “clear your calendar” for now — but if downtown Vancouver finally gets its own semi-regular street party culture out of this, we’re not mad about it.
