Monday was International Overdose Awareness Day, and here in B.C., that’s not an abstract observance — it’s a day that lands directly on a province that remains one of the hardest-hit regions in the country for the ongoing toxic drug crisis.
Vancouver in particular has been at the centre of this crisis for years, and a day like this exists to do two things at once: honour the people who’ve been lost, and keep public attention on a crisis that’s long since stopped making front-page headlines even as it continues, day after day, largely out of view.
Why Awareness Days Still Matter
It’s easy to be cynical about awareness days in general, but a crisis this long-running is exactly where that cynicism does real harm. Public attention on the toxic drug supply has waxed and waned for years, largely tracking whatever else is dominating the news cycle, while the underlying crisis hasn’t actually eased. A dedicated day is one of the few reliable mechanisms for pulling attention back, even briefly, to a public health emergency that’s become background noise for people not directly affected by it.
For the families, friends, and outreach workers who live with this crisis every day, that kind of visibility isn’t symbolic — it’s a rare moment where the broader public is paying the same level of attention they never get to stop paying.
