Vancouver’s Filipino community has been asking for a place to call its own for a long time. Now there’s real movement.
During the provincial election campaign, the BC NDP announced that, if re-elected on October 24, 2026, it would set aside $15 million toward a permanent Filipino Cultural Centre. The pledge builds on earlier provincial intentions and community consultation, and it adds to a federal commitment announced in 2025. The size of the federal contribution hasn’t been made public.
What we know so far
- No final site yet. Several Filipino organizations have put forward proposals to lead the project, including one in Burnaby and two in Vancouver. Neither level of government has named a preferred proposal or host city.
- A leading concept in Mount Pleasant. One proposal would place the centre on the lower floors of a mixed-use tower just off Main Street, with a share of annual hotel revenue supporting operations and programming. Vancouver City Council gave it preliminary endorsement in late 2025, and a rezoning application is the next step.
- An interim home is almost here. A roughly 1,500 sq. ft. space in the Library Square atrium downtown, run by the Filipino Legacy Society, is expected to open soon and will serve the community until a permanent site is ready.
Why this matters
Filipino Canadians are one of the largest and most visible communities in Metro Vancouver, and they’ve shaped everything from healthcare to the food scene. Yet, as Filipino Legacy Society chair Warren Flandez put it, the community has long gathered in borrowed spaces. A dedicated centre means a permanent spot for festivals, language and arts programs, and intergenerational gatherings, not just a once-a-year block party.
The momentum also comes after the deadly tragedy at the 2025 Lapu Lapu Day block party, which left the community grieving and sharpened the call for a safe, lasting gathering place.
A campaign promise isn’t a building, and the details, from location to operator, are still to be settled. But the interim space and the growing public support make this one worth watching.
