Vancouver’s metal scene is taking to the water again. Vancouver Metal Cruise 5 is setting sail with local band Egregore among the acts bringing the heavy sound out onto the open water.
Exact sail date, route, and the full lineup weren’t confirmed at post time, but the format alone makes this one worth flagging: a metal show on a boat is not a subtle idea, and that’s exactly the point. Five editions in, Vancouver Metal Cruise has carved out its own weird, specific niche in a city with no shortage of concert venues but very few floating ones.
Why a scene like this sticks around
Vancouver’s metal and heavy music community has always run a little under the radar compared to the city’s bigger indie-rock and electronic scenes, sustained mostly by DIY promoters, small venues, and events exactly like this one that turn a gimmick into a genuine annual tradition. Getting to five editions means enough people keep showing up every year to make it worth doing again — that’s the real marker of a scene that’s found its footing.
It’s also just a genuinely fun example of Vancouver’s water-adjacent identity showing up somewhere you wouldn’t expect it — this is a city that will find a way to put literally anything on a boat.
Been on a previous Metal Cruise, or is this the year you finally check it out? Tell us. 👀
