Manga, manhua, manhwa, webtoons: if you grew up on any of them, there’s a Vancouver exhibition with your name on it.
The Chinese Canadian Museum, in partnership with the Barbican Centre, is presenting the Canadian premiere of Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form. It opened October 7, 2026 and runs through August 15, 2027, giving you plenty of time to go more than once.
What the show explores
The exhibition looks at the history, diversity and cultural significance of Asian comics, an art form with deep roots and a global audience. It treats comics as serious visual culture, not just entertainment: a way communities tell their own stories, reflect on their histories and imagine new ones.
Why it lands in Vancouver
The Chinese Canadian Museum is a fitting home for this premiere. Chinese Canadian history in this city runs from early settlement through Chinatown’s long fight for recognition, and the museum exists to tell those stories on their own terms. A show about Asian comics adds a living, pop-culture thread to that story, one that speaks to younger visitors and lifelong fans alike.
Plan your visit
- On view: October 7, 2026 to August 15, 2027
- Where: Chinese Canadian Museum, Vancouver
- Tip: confirm hours and admission with the museum before heading out, as we couldn’t verify those details
Go with a friend who reads the stuff you don’t. The best part of an exhibition like this is the argument over favourites afterward. What’s the first comic series you got hooked on?
