Thirty years of dancing. One last solo.
Vancouver choreographer Wen Wei Wang is preparing to perform what he’s calling Last Solo, his final solo performance, at The Dance Centre on October 23 and 24 at 8 pm. It’s presented as part of the centre’s Global Dance Connections series.
A career across continents
Wang began dancing in China and moved to Canada in 1991. Since then he’s become one of the city’s best-known choreographers. He performed with the Judith Marcuse Dance Company, spent seven years with Ballet BC, and founded Wen Wei Dance in 2003.
His choreography has travelled well beyond Vancouver, with commissions for Alberta Ballet, Ballets Jazz Montréal, Vancouver Opera and San Francisco Opera. From 2018 to 2024 he was artistic director of Ballet Edmonton.
The team behind the show
- Gary James Joynes: visual and sound artist, working with live modular synthesizers, vocals and analog video
- Jonathan Kim: lighting
- Linda Chow: costumes
If you go
- When: October 23 and 24, 8 pm

Immigrant artists have shaped Vancouver’s stages for decades, and Wang is a clear example of how far one career can carry a city’s dance scene. A farewell solo is a rare chance to see an artist reflect on his own body of work in real time. Are you going? Tell us what you think afterwards.
