No ‘Fall Back’ This Year: What BC’s Permanent Daylight Time Means for Vancouver on Nov. 1

BC skips the Nov. 1 ‘fall back’ and stays on permanent daylight time (UTC-7). Here’s how it changes Vancouver’s time gap with Seattle, Alberta and Toronto.

Good news for anyone who dreads the clock change: on November 1, Vancouver keeps its clocks right where they are.

BC is moving to permanent daylight saving time, which the province is calling Pacific time (PCT). When other regions “fall back” on November 1, 2026, BC won’t. The offset stays at UTC-7, the same as the daylight time we’ve had since March.

How the time gaps shift

  • Toronto and most of Ontario: two hours ahead of Vancouver
  • Alberta: one hour ahead
  • Yukon: same time as Vancouver
  • Seattle and Washington state: Vancouver is one hour ahead
  • Alaska: Vancouver is two hours ahead

That means a cross-border trip to Seattle now comes with a one-hour jump, and the call with your family in Toronto lands earlier in their evening than you might be used to.

Why BC is doing it

The stated goals are better overall health, less disruption for families, simpler scheduling and an extra hour of evening light in winter.

What to watch for

  • Eastern-based offices will sit two hours ahead of Vancouver until clocks spring forward again
  • Federal departments, Crown corporations, airports and other agencies may adjust shift times to line up with Eastern time
  • IT teams are checking automated systems so the switch doesn’t cause errors
  • The BC Chamber of Commerce says it removes a recurring scheduling problem, with workforce fatigue and administrative costs hitting small businesses and shift-based industries hardest

A few parts of northeastern and southeastern BC use a different time zone, and local governments decide which one. Those areas keep their current zone.

So, are you team permanent daylight time, or will you miss that extra hour of sleep? Tell us.
